Alyson,
I am so happy that Caroline's eyes are in perfect condition! I hope it always stays that way!
6% body fat is low and I am sure the docs want her to gain a little there. Although most people think fat is the enemy, some is needed as reserves. If one gets sick and can not eat and has no body fat, the muscles are used for food instead and that is when ketoacidosis jumps in and harms a sick body. Your doctors are giving great advice, but I know Caroline is soooo active, which is great! But she needs those reserves.
You are doing a great job Alyson. I know you think her A1c is terrible, but you also have to realize that as many as 99% diabetics in years past were very high all the time, but without todays instant test meters, they just didn't know. We know now and it makes us freaked out, but when a little body is growing, things are hard to be any kind of normal. Controlling blood sugars too tightly can cause many lows and we now know lows cause brain cell death and are bad business and especially for a young person.
Many people think a diabetic with a normal non diabetic A1c is a good thing, when in fact, it is a brain cell robber. This is fairly new information too, so many doctors are professing normal non diabetic numbers as safe, when in fact it is just the opposite. As we learn more about diabetes, attitudes change like the directions of the wind. We must use common sense and understand that as diabetics, we can not have perfect non diabetes numbers, with out paying a price elsewhere. after all, we are NOT non diabetics!
Caroline is a happy healthy child and it is due to your most excellent mothering! Caroline could not have a better mother and neither could Davis.
Hugs, Itsme Wayne
