Today was a whirlwind!! Caroline had the full workup on her eyes, and the doc said zero signs of any issues. WOOHOO! Instead of every 2 years, she has to go every year now.
She also saw a new Endo at TCH. I REALLY liked her - and I hesitate to say that. Caroline has a few changes to make, and we go back July 1st. As for the CGMs, I still got the answer that TCH is a "teaching hospital" but that it wasn't out of the question....so maybe by the time she's 20!!
Her A1c was awful - just as bad as last time.....
The biggest change....she will bolus for what she thinks she's going to eat before she eats. In the past, she has corrected and bolused for 50% of her expected carb intake (before she eats). She will now bolus for 100% plus 2 tenths of a unit 10 minutes before she eats.
WHEW - a bit scary....but the doc said she already has pre-pubescent hormones and needs the extra insulin.
She's in the 30th percentile in weight and the 43rd in height. The doc said she was FINE at her height/weight! Her body fat was 6% - too low....but she's so active, so not much can be done about it. She does wanting her eating more carbs because she plays soccer 5-6 days per week. Caroline usually has between 20-40 carbs per meal - doc said it should be more like 40-60....that could prove interesting. I have a child that prefers cherry tomatoes and celery for a snack!!
Caroline's total daily insulin is between 22-28 units per day right now (basal + bolus). They want it to be between 28-35 for her age/weight/height. Makes sense to increase insulin along with carb intake.
The biggest relief is that her eyes looked great. The doc said that the double vision is due (most likely) to her exhaustion at the end of the day. She said when she's tired, frustrated, sleepy, or stressed it can induce some "lazy eye" tendencies.
So, here's to slowing down a little bit!!
